Licealiz now on its 3rd year for Kilusang Kontra Kuto Campaign

Head lice infestation continues to be a public concern in the Philippines especially on primary schools. According to a study conducted by the Department of Edcucation (DepEd) and the University of the Philippines (UP), head lice infestation is considered as the second most common health problem in schools here in the Philippines next to tooth decay. While it it may not be a fatal condition, attention must still be given to this persistent condition because if left untreated, more problems may arise.

It can cause other serious infections
The surface of our skin is filled with different kinds of bacteria. According to Dr. Arlene Bertuso from University of the Philippines – Manila, College of Public Health, while lice itself can’t cause infections, “severe scratching caused but allergic reactions to the saliva can cause scalp to break, therefore increasing the chance of secondary bacterial infection”.

It can decrease self-confidence to both the child and parents
Head lice or kuto often has negative connotation due to its association with poor hygiene and low social status, which can cause a child to lose confidence around his/her peers especially when teased. Parents whose child has been infected with head lice feel embarrassed since they feel like they exhibited poor parenting by letting their child get infested by head lice.

It decreases academic or work productivity
Itchiness and inflammation are effects from the bites of head lice. The irritation caused by the bites of the head lice can disrupt concentration in school or at work, hence affecting productivity. It can also cause loss of sleep, which can then lead to irritability, short attention span and lack of focus.

Misinformation can cause more damage
Myths and superstitions are already ingrained in Filipino culture and society. Kuto is surrounded by several of these myths and misconceptions that can be harmful to the infested such as the use of mayonnaise or kerosene and wrapping the child’s head with plastic overnight. Incorrect information like these can lead to untreated head lice, which can spread quickly to the whole family or to the whole class simply through physical contact with one infested person.

Making Clothes Lasts Longer with Style: Electrolux Fashion Care

Classic Style? I honestly don’t have any idea on what does it mean. However, a college instructor’s rationale about clothing style influenced me since then. He said “Basta dili lang ka bastos tanawon, okey na imo gisuot!” (“As long as you don’t improperly dressed, then you’re presentably good!”)

Growing up with hand-me-down clothes, my college instructor’s slogan was a motivation. Regardless of style, as long as it fits, it’s a thumb up sign for me and surely keeping it until it is no longer wearable.

MommyAfterWork Electrolux Fashion Care 1

I grew up wearing school uniforms and jeans + shirts style. Since I sucked at dressing up, I am thankful for school uniforms. On wash days, I got one style and that is jeans + shirt. Thankfully, the style then was over-sized shirts and baggy pants. It will always fit on me since I didn’t gain much weight. Then, working on a manufacturing company does not have an opportunity to get stylish either. I only know one style then –>  cleanroom suits 🙂 My current company though has a dress code but allows jeans & shirts to work.  Needless to say, I’m senseless when it comes to fashion.

MommyAfterWork Electrolux Fashion Care 2

Lately though, I am thankful for special occasions. Occasions like weddings, birthday and year-end parties gives me an opportunity to try different dressing styles. I realized that it is fun (especially when you do it with your siblings). It makes me pretty sometimes with the thought that its not ordinary. But since I seldom dress up, I have to make sure my clothes are kept to last longer so its still presentable and looks new for my next use.

Here are my “To Dos” to make sure my clothes has the #TimelessStyle:
Choose clothes of good quality
Yep, let’s not talk about the brand. There are clothes that are soft yet strong enough not to easily tear down.

Choose comfortable clothes
Confidence comes from being comfortable. Jean and shirts, as long as its clean and makes you comfortable, then go. One time, I wore an itchy polo for my report presentation that I wish I’d wear I’d rather present a demo wearing these rather in a slacks and itchy polo.

Choose proper care
For my favorite and soft clothes, I prefer hand-washing since I can control my hands to be gentle with the fabric. But as much as I want all the clothes to be handwash, with no househelp, I can’t manage. Handwashing the intimates already eats up my Saturday morning so I have my eye on one of the Electrolux Washing Machine hoping it will make my weekends more fun rather than consuming more time in the laundry area. Electrolux Washing Machine is not only about washing clothes to get it clean but they have the technology to take care the clothes with proper care. Check out their site for Electrolux Washing Machine Promo Deals.

Because your clothes are properly taken cared off by #ElectroluxFashionCare, you are given an assurance that it will last longer — giving you confidence no matter how many times you re-use it and it means cost saving as it refrains you from buying another set of clothes.

Pamper’s introduces its new Less Lawlaw Diapers

Pampers Goes to Cebu_1

Pampers Philippines went to Cebu to personally introduce their new Pampers Less Lawlaw Diapers. I was one of the lucky mama who was able to witness the small gathering of mothers (and fathers :)) and babies held at Gymboree, Banilad Cebu City.
Pampers Goes to Cebu_2Seeing these smiling, adorable babies in their tutus, bows, ribbons made me miss my kids in their toddler years and wished they are part in this fun-filled activity. Pampers Philippines gave the babies a chance to explore Gymboree’s amenities and bet they are had so much fun as they also learn the new Pampers Go Galaw Jingle. The babies swayed joyfully to the upbeat music even parents can’t help but dance too.
Pampers Goes to Cebu_3The babies can move freely with no difficulty while wearing the new Pampers that fit snugly plus, this new diaper did not seem to bother the babies nor hinder their movement.
Pampers Goes to Cebu_4According to a 2012 study from US National Institute of Health, the bulk caused by saggy or lawlaw diaper may hamper the baby’s ability to walk properly. Not too many parents realize this, we too were not concern then.  When choosing the diaper, we only consider the diaper’s price then. The old Pampers suit our budget even it manifest its saggy-ness especially after longer use. Thankfully, Pampers found a solution through Pampers Baby Dry with its well-loved magic gel channels to absorb wetness evenly and distribute it throughout the whole diaper allowing babies to move freely.

Pampers Goes to Cebu_5

According to Adie Villegas, Pampers Communications Manager, “Pampers put baby’s development at the core of our innovations. We want them to be comfortable an to move undisturbed from saggy, lawlaw diaper and with Pampers Baby Dry more and more moms #ChoosePampers for their babies to have the most fun #PampersGoGalaw days.”

Pampers Baby Dry, is available in major supermarket, groceries, and drug stores nationwide, as well as online on Lazada Ph.

7 Lucky Dishes for the Chinese New Year 2018

Chinese DinnerPhoto Credits

The dragons may be dancing in the streets this Lunar New Year but this 2018 ushers in man’s best friend – the tenth Chinese zodiac sign, the Earth Dog.

The Chinese New Year celebration is full of various traditions that many people follow to ensure good health and prosperity – from new clothes, colors, feng shui charms and of course, food!

To help your family have an auspicious start this Year of the Earth Dog, Electrolux is sharing with you a list of traditional dishes that are not only delicious but also deemed lucky by Chinese tradition. Serve this up during your Chinese New Year feast.

1. Noodles (happiness and longevity)
The Longevity Noodles or changshou mian is a dish that’s always present in Chinese New Year celebrations as well as birthdays. It is said to symbolize a longer and happier life for the one who eats the dish. These are longer than the usual noodles and are always left uncut.

2. Dumplings (wealth)
It is said that the more dumplings or jiaozi you eat on Chinese New Year’s Eve, the more money will come in the incoming year. This belief comes from its shape that resembles the old Chinese currency called ingots. Even the pleats in the dough should be a good number as if it’s too flat it is believed to signify poverty.

3. Spring Rolls (wealth)
Usually filled with vegetables or meat, spring rolls or chun jun comes from the Chinese name of the Spring Festival, chunjie, which is when they are traditionally prepared. They are said to bring you wealth since their cylindrical shape and golden-yellow color are similar to gold bars.

4. Oranges and pomelos (fullness and wealth)
These fruits are particularly lucky because of their circular and “golden” color, symbolizing fullness and wealth. They are often used for decoration as it is also believed to bring good luck and fortune or given as gifts in a fruit basket. It is also said that the more you eat these fruits, the more wealth you will receive.

5. Fish (prosperity)
Fish in Chinese is called yú which sounds like “surplus” in Chinese. It represents prosperity and as you eat fish you hope for abundance for the coming year – niannian youyu. Fish is usually served whole for Chinese New Year celebrations as a symbol for unity in the family. Make sure to leave leftovers for the next day to signify a welcomed excess in prosperity.

6. Sweet Rice Balls (family togetherness)
Traditionally served in a sweet and syrupy soup, sweet rice balls or tang yuan purports unity, harmony and togetherness due to their round shape. They are also associated with reunions.

7. Tikoy (higher income or status)
In China, this glutinous rice cake is called nian gao and sounds like it’s saying “getting higher year after year” or nian nian gao sheng. This is why rice cakes have come to symbolize an increase – it could be a literal increase in height, a business rising up to success, or a person getting promoted.

Help Handog Lingap hosts a fun-filled day for 800 learners with just PHP1000

Help give 800 learners with disabilities a fun-filled day of exploring their capabilities with just PHP 1,000!

Handog Lingap

Now on its 10th official year, JCI Manila’s Handog Lingap 2018 is putting together another day of fun and learning for indigent and special kids with bigger, better, and more sustainable things in store to help them thrive.

Approximately 1 out of 7, or roughly 5.1 million Filipino children, are living with disabilities, according to UNICEF’s latest report. With the lack of understanding and resources available to them, these kids suffer from unmet health needs and societal stigma which ends up limiting their development and opportunities.

Every child brings something unique and special into the world. JCI Manila has long been celebrating this, recognizing the role each child plays in our nation’s future through its annual flagship and legacy project, Handog Lingap.

This coming March 12, 2018, over 800 indigent children with special needs and their teachers from public schools in Manila under the Department of Education’s Special Education (SPED) Program, will be treated to a day of fun and learning including several activities to help them explore their potential.

Handog Lingap is raising Php 800,000 to make this event possible. Supporters (individuals or groups) can sponsor a child for Php 1,000 each. This will go directly to the event for the kids, from their meals, to their gifts, transportation, and various activities.

Activities:
Swimming Classes led by Bert Lozada Swimming School will give the children the interactive physical activity integral to their development.
Disaster Preparedness Workshop by Frederick Dalena, which will equip caregivers and kids with knowledge on how to save their lives in different high-stress scenarios.
– Transition Programs Forum will also be held to start the dialogue on how best to transition children from SPED schools to the workplace.

“We are celebrating a decade of bringing joy to these kids this year. So we want to go bigger and deeper, reaching more children and making a lifelong impact in their lives.”, said Handog Lingap 2018 Project Chairman, Francis Talion. “We want to equip them with important life skills, giving them the chance to improve their quality of life, empowering them with compassion and inclusion, and giving them the support they need to succeed.”

Handog Lingap, along with its partners Department of Education (DepEd), Bert Lozada Swim School, Dare to Care, and Golden Heart Manila, would like to invite everyone to help make a positive impact in the lives of indigent children with disabilities.

It takes a village to raise a child. Interested individual and corporate supporters can visit the official crowdfunding page at http://bit.ly/HelpHandogLingap or follow and message @helphandoglingap on both Facebook and Instagram to learn more. Donations in kind are also accepted, any heartfelt support will go a long way in helping make the world a bit more special for these kids who are, most often than not, unseen, unheard, and misunderstood.

When decluttering becomes difficult

pixabay - clutter roomPhoto Credits

I am a hoarder. I think. I have a heap of stuffs tucked in one room. These stuffs according to the husband are trashes and consume much space, I, on the other hand, considered these items of sentimental value. I haven’t got the chance to sort these out and because I’m afraid to might throw something of value, I just have to let these stuffs sit and sleep for awhile. But then, the husband is already complaining because the room’s content for him is an eyesore. Call me over dramatic but I just can’t throw the artworks of my daughter or the test papers of my son. Those kindergarten handwriting or the wedding souvenirs or the toys they played when they were younger. I just can’t let go, not now! In fact, I’m in nostalgia already!

If you’re a hoarder and being pushed to clean up and encounter some anxiety issues during the de-cluttering process, here are some tips that can might help you.

One location for all stuffs
Yes, you need to at least provide boxes for your stuffs. Label for easy identification. You can even categorize them if you want. What I want to emphasize is to put all your storage boxes and things in one location or room. Thankfully for me, we have a spare room for all my stuffs. As long as the door is closed, I’m still safe from the husband. And yes, these items do really take a lot of space so I yep, I hear you, need to work on this as soon as possible.

Sort one at a time
Thankful for weekends as it gives myself an opportunity to check one storage box for sorting at a time. Cleaning up my stuff for a day is not possible. There are weekends that I can’t check the room and sometimes I do feel lazy just by the looking at the boxes. The husband though constantly remind me to clean the storage room. If I have an opportunity to declutter, I just assess the item as either as “I keep it” or “I throw it”. If I still have doubts, I put them on “I keep it” box and assess it again .

Seek help
If you are no longer hesitant to get rid your stuffs, you can hire a home cleaning service. They don’t consider sentimentality on each item thus easier for them to make your home spic and span.
