5 Different Ways To Improve Your Finances For This Year

pexel - dollar on the groundPhoto Credits

At this time of year, after all the expenses from the holidays, its safe to say that our finances can be a bit tight. When a new year begins, we can all feel the pinch, whether you’re currently in financial trouble or not. But, this doesn’t mean that the rest of the year has to be tough when it comes to money, right? It’s only natural that everyone is going to start off wanting to be a bit frugal, but by the end of the year, we could definitely change that. If one of your resolutions for the year ahead is to be frugal and really make the most of your finances, you’ve come to the right post. Because we’re going to talk through five different ways (from well knowledgeable advisers) that we can do to improve our finances for the year ahead.

Start A Budget
The first thing you’re going to want to do, is to start a budget. This is something that you often associate with being on a tight budget, but that’s not necessarily the case. It’s just a way to get much smarter with your money. Your budget can be as big or as small as you need it to be, but the point is to get yourself used to allocation portions of your income for set things, and then sticking to it. If some of those set things are savings and a fashion fund, then so be it. But budgeting is a great way to keep your mind in check when it comes to what you’re spending.

Reduce Your Outgoings
Now that you’re getting used to the idea of being more conscious of your money and how you spend it, you’re then going to want to think about reducing your outgoings. This is something that comes quite naturally to you. Because as you start to look into what you’re spending more, you’ll notice that there are things you spend money on that you don’t want to be spending, or at least not as much. So this will allow you to start saving on your monthly expenses overall.

Increase Your Income
From here, you may also want to look into ways of increasing your income. This can often feel difficult to do if you’re not able to get a promotion in your current job. But you could look at getting a new job, moving to a new company, or even starting something for yourself. There are lots of different side hustles, from selling crafts to freelance writing, than can help you top up your income.

Bridge The Gap
However, each of those things can take time. And if you’re currently in a difficult financial situation, you may need to look into small personal loans online to help you bridge the gap. It’s still important for you to stabilize and improve your situation now, so that it can improve as the year goes on.

Set Goals
Finally, you’re also going to want to think about setting yourself some financial goals too. Because having goals helps you to stay on track. Whether it’s to save a certain amount or to reduce debt, you will be able to actively work towards that goal to then achieve it by the end of the year.

Remembering Osmena Peak and Kawasan Trek

This is a sponsored post. All opinions are mine.

Osmena Peak - Kawasan

The last climb I had was last February 2013. 5 yrs ago, we trekked to Cebu’s Osmena Peak and traversed to Kawasan Falls. I still remember how we faced the cold, windy weather, the sweat as walk our way to the campsite and then to the falls, the difficult trail, the muscle pains and the joy of reconnecting with nature. As a novice, I’d say everyone did a good job as the team completes the trek safely. Personally, completing it was self-fulfillment.

We started our ascend from Mantalungon, Dalaguete’s market with a fully loaded tummy. During that day, rain pours every now and then that it caused the trail to be muddy and slippery. Also, the wind slows us from our track too where hats and ponchos are blown from there and here. Then fog is everywhere that is gives us almost 0% visibility of our way. We could have used trailers but it could spoil the fun, besides only foot paths are available going to the peak.

Nevertheless, we made it to the camp site. It took us awhile to set up our tent, waiting for the pouring to stop. However, seems like the weather that day was not cooperating so with the rain and wind, we looked for a better location within the campsite. Well, you can’t run away from the rain and wind, can you? And oh, I remembered our friend’s tent that was taken away by the wind. We tried to recover it but to no avail as the wind is faster than us. Good thing some of us brought extra tents.

Osmena Peak - Kawasan_2

I love the energy of the our group. For first timers to trek on a not so good weather, its still uplifting to know that instead of complaining, they shown positive attitude on the situation enough to make dinner and still sit together and talk and share stories. This is what I love to some millennials — knows how to enjoy make the most of it despite the situation! As for me who can’t bear the cold air, I didn’t stayed long and went inside our tent. Even inside our tent, its still I can still feel the coldness though in fact it was one of my longest night ever. I’m not sure if I was able to sleep, everything is so cold. If only we have camping blankets like Montem, for a more comfortable sleep 🙂

Osmena Peak - Kawasan_5

The next morning, we get a chance to peek the surroundings as Mr. Sun appears briefly. A very rewarding scene indeed.
Osmena Peak - Kawasan_4

After we were able to get enough of Osmena Peak’s beauty, we started our trail to Kawasan Falls. It was more or less 6-hr walk. It started out exciting but then becomes painful. Thankful for the daily short walks towards the mall near our office during lunch times, as this helps me endure. I am tired but as soon as I hear the rushing of water from Kawasan, I become excited and determined to reach the place.

Osmena Peak - Kawasan_3

It was worth a climb even with muscle pains that lasts for a week. Memories are stamped and will never be erased. Sadly I was not able to visit the peak again…hopefully soon and hopefully, I could bring with me my kids in exploring the mountains and nature 🙂

Happy New Year 2018

Happy New Year Everyone.

MommyAfterWork_2018

Hey, hey, hey!
How was your new year? Hoping for the best year ahead 🙂

For us, this is our second time we welcome the new year at our own home away from our family at the province. We try to enjoy and have fun too even we are physically away from the clan 🙂

The family had good year last year, thanks to His grace. Though we had a rough vacation due to typhoon and flood and UTI and LBM and then death of a family member as the new year starts, we are moving on and moving forward.

Typhoon Vinta
Typhoon Vinta passed by Northen Mindanao last December affecting lots of families including the husband’s. Hubby’s house was slightly affected with the flooding thus draining the water and house cleaning is needed. Additionally, we are thankful that everyone in city is safe, thanks to the alertness and cooperation of the community.

UTI and Amoebiasis
For some reason, UTI strikes me during my stay in the province and my daughter togther with her cousins suffered from LBM and fever too due to amoebiasis. We blame the recent flooding in the city that could possibly contaminate the water supply. With our situation, we decided to visit the hospital to seek medical help. However, we had a bad experience with Cagayan de Oro Medical Center. The ER team don’t attend after the hospital’s office hours especially if you are using HMO so be sure to bring extra cash when go there after office hours and on holiday season. Additionally, the made a clarification that ER will not entertain you if your illness is not life threatening. Good thing there still kindness when we ask for we made an appeal.

Death and Hope
The passing of my sister-in-law’s husband is a big realization that our stay here on earth with our family is temporary. His death was sudden being young and relax. I’m lost of words. Jeremiah 29:11 reminded me that God is good. God told us not lose hope for He has a plan and gives us an assurance that everything is gonna be okay.

Jeremiah 29:11 (from New International Version (NIV))
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”.

Still Inspired by life’s beauty, we are here to enjoy life to its fullest, create moments with your family, have fun and pray. While we are given a chance to savor and enjoy this God-given life.

And so with hope Mommy After Work is back to sieze the day.

Have a Happy New Year Everyone!

How to Compost Kitchen Scraps

In any home, there will always be some kind of food waste daily. While these food wastes may seem like something that are just thrown away, did you know that you can put these so-called waste into something useful? There’s this thing called composting where you can use these kitchen scraps for the benefit of something else. Plus, composting can be done at any point in the year. You can even do composting in winter even if the weather is really cold! Interested? Here are some steps on how to compost kitchen scraps the right way:

compostingPhoto Credit

Understand what composting is
If composting is all new to you, let me define what composting is and what benefits you will be getting when doing it. In a nutshell, composting is the process of turning natural waste into a product that makes the quality of your soil improve. It is similar to a fertilizer minus the chemicals. This makes it better for our environment. Through composting, wastage will be reduced since household wastes are used for this process. Composting makes your soil more healthy which will result to better growth for your plants.

Coordinate with your municipal office regarding home waste management
There may be instances that your local community restricts the activities of food waste composting. Your local office believes that they are more confident in doing that type of work better. Therefore, there is a need to inquire with the respective department whether it is allowed or what the limitations are when it comes to composting.

Know what items are good as compost
In general, most food wastes can be used as compost. However, here are some of the most common food waste materials that can be subjected to composting:
• Vegetable or fruit wastes
• Old flour-based products such as bread or noodles
• Coffee filters and tea bags
• Grains or cereals
• The pulp after juicing vegetables or fruits
• Old herbs and spices
• Expired boxed goods
• Finely-crushed egg shells
• Chopped corn cobs
In terms of what not to compost, avoid meat, fish, dairy, and oils. These materials attract unwanted organisms such as rats and maggots. Also, these will make your compost bin smell really, really bad!

Have a separate trash bin for the storage of your compost materials
Once good-as-compost materials are mixed with waste which can’t be used for composting, it will be hard to separate it. This will result to an increase in waste materials brought to the landfills which can cause harm to our environment. With that, you should have a separate container for your compost materials. These can range to a small bucket or a large trash bin depending on the amount of your waste. However, make sure that these are sealed properly in order to prevent flies from coming. One tip is to have your bin lined with newspaper before covering with the lid.

Add a layer of non-food compost materials to your trash bin
This will prevent problems from occurring such as the attraction of flies and rats or the stench of bad odor. Another benefit of this is that it makes your kitchen waste turn into compost faster. Some examples of these non-food compost materials are soil (of good health), leaves, or lawn clippings.

Keep your compost moist and mix it every two weeks or so
Keeping your compost moist makes nutrients circulate keeping the quality of your compost. However, do not make your compost really wet. Just add water to your compost only when it looks dry. Also, make sure to turn or mix your compost every two weeks or so. This makes air (oxygen) circulate which is necessary to create good compost.

Additional Tip:
If you’d like to compost during the cold winter months, what you can do is add more of the non-food compost materials mentioned earlier than food waste materials. You can also use tarps instead of newspapers to cover your bin. Doing this makes your compost warm making the process of composting still work.
So there you have it. What we have provided are some tips on how to reduce food waste by turning these into compost. Through these, we will minimize the amount of waste being brought to the landfills. Also, it is relatively cheaper than purchasing chemical fertilizers plus it does not harm our environment. We hope that you found the information helpful and encouraged you to turn waste into compost. Let us know your take on composting in the comments section below. If you have any other tips that you’d like to share, feel free to also leave a comment below.

Keeping A Tidy Home With A Busy Family

If yours is the kind of household where people are rushing around all the time, you are not alone. Having no house help (like us), juggling house chores from meal preparation to bathing children to cleaning up the clutter might be excruciating. Some people find that the home can get messy, especially when there are a lot of children or extended family around. When it gets like this, it can be hard to know how you can expect to keep the home tidy. However, with the right approach and a decent understanding, you should find that it is actually relatively simple to do so. In this article, we are going to look at some of the things that you might want to consider if you want to keep your home as tidy as you would like.

pexel-bedroomPhoto Credit

Laying Down The Rules

Usually in a busy family home, the biggest reason that it does not stay tidy is because the children are allowed to run amok as they please. If you want to really keep your home as clean and tidy as possible, then you will find it is necessary to ensure that your children pay attention to the rules of the home. Of course, firstly you need to actually lay those rules down. If you are wondering what kind of rules you should try to come up with, the answer is anything that you think is necessary in keeping your home in the best possible state.

The truth is that it is having these rules at all, rather than what they specifically are, that ensures that your family behave in the home, and therefore help to keep the home in the best state. In our home, it is the husband who do the reminding. So you should write down your list of fuels and have them on permanent display in the house somewhere. This alone will make a huge difference, regardless of what the rules themselves actually state. Do that and you will find that it can really help on the whole. Having rules will make for a tighter-run family home, and therefore a tidier and a cleaner one.
Dividing The Chores

It is often a sensible idea to get your family involved in the chores as much as possible. If you do that, it can really make a huge difference to how tidy the home is on the whole, and it also has a way of instilling the sense of being clean and tidy into the home too. You need to find a fair way to divide out the chores, as if there is an argument then this can quickly lead to a divisive home. But you should try your hardest to make sure that everyone is as happy as can be with the chores that they are given. If they’re not, you might be surprised at the kind of trouble this can lead to.

pexel-carpet cleaningPic Credit

Given that the chores are divided out fairly, you are then faced with the task of making sure that everyone actually does them. This is something else altogether, and it can be one of the hardest aspects of this whole procedure. It is not a bad idea to introduce something in the way of punishment for anyone who doesn’t do their fair share of the chores. With that, you should be able to ensure that the chores all get done fairly and on time.

Keeping Clean Pets

It is common for family homes to have one or more pets. If you have pets in your home, you will certainly have noticed early on that they can often cause a significant amount of mess around the home. Whether it is from their fury being shed, or worse messes still, there are always ways in which pets can find ways to make mess in the home. If you want your home to be kept as well as possible, you will need to learn how to keep clean pets as best as you can. There are a number of aspects to this to consider, so let’s take a look at a few of the most basic now.

To begin with, you will want to make sure that you keep them clean as much ass you can by bathing them, especially for dogs. If they are muddy, this can be especially important, but its good practice anyway. You will also want to look into getting some Pet-Lock best flea control so that you don’t need to worry about what is in their fur. Then of course there is the process of house training them, which can often be surprisingly hard to get right. The more time you spend on trying to get your pet house trained, the more likely it is that your home will remain in a good state of repair, so this is worth looking into. Train them well, and you will really notice the difference.

Enjoy The Home

When you focus too much on keeping your home clean to the detriment of enjoying it, you will find that it doesn’t always work. Focusing too much in too fine a detail on the cleanliness of the home can make it seem as though it is just never clean, so you might want to remember that it is also important to enjoy the home as best as you can. As long as you and your family are enjoying the home fully, you will find that it makes a significant difference to how well lived in it is. The truth is that enjoying the home as a home will not stop you from being able to keep it clean, so long as you know how to draw the line here. Spend the necessary time finding that balance, and you will be much better off for it – and your family will be much happier as well.
As long as you keep the home clean while enjoying it, you will be able to be happy and keep it in the best possible state. This is great news, as it means a better home for all the family.

5 Ways Induction Cooktops can make Holiday Cooking Easier

Electrolux Induction CookTop

The Christmas season is upon us and that means lots of delicious holiday meals with friends and family! The chance to get-together with our loved ones. The chance to cook family’s favorite and traditional meals. The chance to sit and relax and feel the holiday spirit. But while its fun, it can also be chaotic with all the planning, shopping, preparing and cooking multiple dishes, entertaining, cleaning up afterward.

So, how to survive this busy season of feasts and parties?
Good news! This post talks about how an induction cooktop in a way can actually bring back the merriment in holiday cooking. Here are several ways induction cooking can make preparing holiday meals stress-free:

1. Induction cooking is faster.

Electrolux Induction CookTop - power speed

Holiday parties are always bountiful feasts and when you have to cook a lot of dishes, each with different steps, speed is of the essence unless you want to spend the whole day in the kitchen.

Induction cooking is faster than gas. Utilizing the induction technology, the Electrolux Induction Hob can boil 1 liter of water in just 3 minutes as the heat is directed to the whole bottom surface of the cookware. It’s perfect for that quick boil, blanching or sautéing.

2. Induction cooktops are safer.

Electrolux Induction CookTop - safety cool touch

Many hands make light work, right? It’s actually easier to involve your kids in cooking holiday meals when you use an induction cooktop. By ditching the flames, you don’t have to fret over accidental burns.

The beauty of the induction cooker is the heat is limited to the area where your pots or pans are, leaving the surrounding area safe to touch.

It’s also easy to check if your cookware is induction-friendly. If one of those quirky ref magnets you have sticks to your pan, that means it’s induction-compatible.

3. Induction cooktops are energy efficient.

Electrolux Induction CookTop - precise temperature control_a

The holidays have a knack of burning a hole through your pocket but by using an induction hob with 90% energy efficiency, you can cook all your holiday feasts without the worry of buying multiple gas tanks or hike up your electric bill.

None of the heat is wasted flowing up from the burner around the outside of the cookware and since the heat is localized to the bottom of your pots and pans, you can heat up things faster using less energy.

It also has precise temperature control, as it allows you to go from high to low heat instantly – perfect for melting chocolate for a delectable ganache, steaming leche flan and even deep-frying crispy pata.

4. Induction cooktops keep your kitchen cool.

Every family has that designated holiday chef. Whether it’s mom, dad, tita, kuya, ate or you, it’s now possible to go from your kitchen straight to your party.

With the Electrolux induction hob, you can cook without heating the surrounding surface area so, you don’t have to worry about sweating like you’re in a sauna before celebrating the holidays with your loved ones.

5. Induction cooktops are easy to clean.

Electrolux Induction CookTop - easy to clean

With drinks, food, good conversation and festivities during the holidays, the last thing you want to worry about is cleaning up a grimy cooking station.

The Electrolux induction hob’s glass ceramic surface makes it easier for you to just wipe off those spills as you cook and seamlessly get rid of grease with minimal effort.

Conquer your holiday feasts easily with the Electrolux Induction Hob (EHED63CS), you can prepare scrumptious holiday meals without the sweat (literally!).

Things That Means Financial Trouble For Families

Keeping on top of your finances when you’ve got a big family is a balancing act that takes a while to master. The most frugal families can run into trouble, even if they’re getting everything right. Life throws you curveballs sometimes and if you aren’t ready to deal with them, you can quickly find yourself in hot water. When it comes to your finances, most of these surprises are things that you can prepare for easily. They’re also things that hit most families at some point so knowing what they are is the key to staying on top of your money. These are the things to watch as these most likely means family in financial trouble.

FinancialTroublesPhoto Credit

Low Income

This is an obvious one but you need to know how to deal with it properly. A common response to low income is to borrow money to make up the shortfalls. Unfortunately, this isn’t the way to go and if you’re borrowing every month, you need a reality check. If you can’t afford your current lifestyle on your wage then you need to cut down, it’s as simple as that. You can start looking for a better job but in the meantime, you need to stop spending so much.

Unexpected House Repairs

Nobody plans for house repairs and if you get a burst pipe or your boiler breaks down, you’ll have to pay out for emergency plumbing services, it’ll cost you around $900 but if the damage is more serious that could go up to a few thousand dollars easily. Chances are, that wasn’t factored into your budget for the month. You should always have a healthy savings account to deal with situations like this, it’s also important to make efforts to avoid damage in the first place. Keeping up with small repairs around the house reduces the chance of bigger problems emerging so it’s going to save you money in the long term.

Healthcare Costs

Health insurance is one of the biggest expenses that most families have and they can easily spiral out of control. If a family member is in an accident or is diagnosed with a serious illness, those bills are going to start shooting up. You’re also likely to need treatments that aren’t covered by your insurance and some of them can cost tens of thousands. You’d be surprised how often there are mistakes on your medical bills so always check them thoroughly, if you challenge them you can pay less.

Financial Disputes

Arguments about money are one the leading causes of problems in a marriage, and they can land you in financial trouble as well. If you and your partner have different ideas about money and how you should use it, you’re never going to agree on a working budget. When you’re working against each other, you’re more likely to make bad decisions. Always try to talk through it and make sure you’re on the same page.

Preparing yourself for these financial surprises might be simple as long resolutions were already planned out, furthermore, it will help stop you from getting into trouble in the future.

Tips for a Cozy and Comfortable Bedroom + Metro’s White Sale

If you are following me on my Instagram, you would have seen my post about the need to invest on bedrooms 🙂 Because next to kitchen, I dream of a cozy and comfortable bedroom! A room designed to be homey and personal, has soft and comfy bed, bed linens and pillows; a blanket that warms me when the air-conditioning is too cold for comfort; a room that smells so good that I want to stay longer and get lazy and just snuggle with kids and hubby. So what does it mean to be a cozy and comfortable bedroom? For me, it must have a:

Right Theme
Right color of wall’s paint and window’s curtains accentuate the beauty of the room. Nothing fancy, as long the color is a personal choice then that’s it. For curtains, my husband told me to be adventurous in combining colors – contrast colors are eye-catching and vibrant. You can ask an interior designers for ideas too 🙂

Comfortable Bed
I experience sleeping on the floor with a banig (Philippine Sleeping Mat). Though hard and gives you back pains, it gives a cool feeling. Also tried mattresses made of foam. It is soft but sultry. Whatever type of bed, be sure it suits you that you wake up full of energy and no pains and soreness on your back and sides.

Quality Bed Linens
In this side of the world where is sun is at its hottest all year round, it is better to choose a material that is soft and breathable to keep you cool.

Pillows
The secret to a good pillow is through its filling. There is that feather or cotton filling that is so soft. Then there is that memory foams that conforms to your head’s shape and returns to each original shape when not used. In my childhood years, we have pillows made of old clothes as fillings. Softness depends on the fabric used, ours was hard and becomes harder the longer we used.

Blankets or Comforters?
My favorite! Indeed a security blanket! I used to have a favorite blanket that I used to rub in on my face before I sleep. It was a super soft blanket but was burned together with our house. The habit eventually stop but the need for soft and warm blanket is still in me. As long as it is soft and I snuggle underneath, then I can easily go to slumber land. The husband has it too! He needs a blanket with a rough texture that he can use for his feet before or during sleep. He can’t sleep without it. My kids on the other hand likes comforters especially when the air-conditioning is too cold. Regardless, blankets or comforters, they are a comfort.
